Migrating Behavior Search’s User Interface from Swing to JavaFX

Agent-based models (ABMs) is a genre of computer modeling that simulates actions and interactions between individual entities (agents). ABM is widely used to simulate behavior in many fields, including biology, ecology, chemistry, physics, economics, and social science. NetLogo is a well-known agent-based programming language that provides a powerful platform to build and examine ABMs. However, to fully analyze a model one must run the model many times with different parameters, which can be a very daunting task. Therefore, Dr. Forrest Stonedahl developed BehaviorSearch, a software tool to help with automating the exploration of ABMs. The software interfaces with the NetLogo platform and allows the client to search for combinations of model parameter settings that will result in a specified target behavior. The earlier version of BehaviorSearch uses the Swing UI library for its user interface, which has several disadvantages including: 1) Graphical components and controlling methods are embedded in the same code, which makes the code really long and hard to debug. 2) The interface\u27s style is dated back to Window 2000. 3) Swing doesn’t support displaying charts inherently. 4) Application doesn’t scale well to modern high-resolution screens. My project focused on migrating the user interface to the JavaFX library, which fixed all of the problems listed above. JavaFX allows the separation of graphical component into an .FXML file. It also supports CSS3 styling and chart display. Overall, this project modernized the look and feel of the BehaviorSearch program and improved its compatibility with newer hardware

Combined therapy with GABA and proinsulin/alum acts synergistically to restore long-term normoglycemia by modulating T-cell autoimmunity and promoting β-cell replication in newly diabetic NOD mice.

Antigen-based therapies (ABTs) fail to restore normoglycemia in newly diabetic NOD mice, perhaps because too few β-cells remain by the time that ABT-induced regulatory responses arise and spread. We hypothesized that combining a fast-acting anti-inflammatory agent with an ABT could limit pathogenic responses while ABT-induced regulatory responses arose and spread. γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) administration can inhibit inflammation, enhance regulatory T-cell (Treg) responses, and promote β-cell replication in mice. We examined the effect of combining a prototypic ABT, proinsulin/alum, with GABA treatment in newly diabetic NOD mice. Proinsulin/alum monotherapy failed to correct hyperglycemia, while GABA monotherapy restored normoglycemia for a short period. Combined treatment restored normoglycemia in the long term with apparent permanent remission in some mice. Proinsulin/alum monotherapy induced interleukin (IL)-4- and IL-10-secreting T-cell responses that spread to other β-cell autoantigens. GABA monotherapy induced moderate IL-10 (but not IL-4) responses to β-cell autoantigens. Combined treatment synergistically reduced spontaneous type 1 T-helper cell responses to autoantigens, ABT-induced IL-4 and humoral responses, and insulitis, but enhanced IL-10 and Treg responses and promoted β-cell replication in the islets. Thus, combining ABT with GABA can inhibit pathogenic T-cell responses, induce Treg responses, promote β-cell replication, and effectively restore normoglycemia in newly diabetic NOD mice. Since these treatments appear safe for humans, they hold promise for type 1 diabetes intervention

    Guessing Games on Triangle-free Graphs

9 pages, submitted to Electronic Journal of Combinatoric9 pages, submitted to Electronic Journal of CombinatoricThe guessing game introduced by Riis is a variant of the "guessing your own hats" game and can be played on any simple directed graph G on n vertices. For each digraph G, it is proved that there exists a unique guessing number gn(G) associated to the guessing game played on G. When we consider the directed edge to be bidirected, in other words, the graph G is undirected, Christofides and Markstr om introduced a method to bound the value of the guessing number from below using the fractional clique number Kf(G). In particular they showed gn(G) >= |V(G)| - Kf(G). Moreover, it is pointed out that equality holds in this bound if the underlying undirected graph G falls into one of the following categories: perfect graphs, cycle graphs or their complement. In this paper, we show that there are triangle-free graphs that have guessing numbers which do not meet the fractional clique cover bound. In particular, the famous triangle-free Higman-Sims graph has guessing number at least 77 and at most 78, while the bound given by fractional clique cover is 50

Moral Gratitude to Ancestors in Worshiping Beliefs of Hung Vuong

Through the ritual of worshiping Hung Vuong, the Vietnamese send their gratitude to their ancestors. This ethic was formed and developed during the history of building and defending the country of the Vietnamese people, becoming the ethics and way of life of the Vietnamese people. The ethic of gratitude to ancestors in Hung Vuong worship belief shows morality with ancestors, it is the link between people in the national community. Since then, compassion and community character have been built, strengthened and developed. Keywords: Ancestor, Hung Vuong, dogma, Worship, Gratitude to ancestors. The Vietnamese people have many precious and traditional moral values, including the filial piety tradition. filial piety demonstrates the moral and willful life ethic, is the way of life of Vietnamese people. It is the philosophy of gratitude expressed most concentrated in the thought of filial piety. filial piety was started from family education. The family is the first, basic and most decisive environment in the education of filial piety religion. Filial piety is a feeling, a duty that arises in feelings, thoughts, thoughts, and manifestations through actions towards grandparents, parents of children. Filial piety is an indispensable quality of human, which is a natural truth in life, so it is automatically called filial piety. filial piety can be understood as an obedient, successful child, inheriting the career of his parents, promoting the fine traditions of the clan, honoring grandparents, parents. Through utilizing a nonlinear application to acquire the best lumen efficiency (LE) for radiation (also known as LER) when color rendering index (CRI) value, especially CRI of R9 for strong red exceeds 90 with correlated color temperature (CCT) range of 2700-6500 K, the white light emitting diodes (WLED) package with adjustable CCT value and comprised of mixed-type light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can be acquired. The WLED model here contains blue and red LEDs with direct emission and a phosphorconversion blue LED or pc/B-LED (including orange and green phosphors mixed with blue LED colorant). The peak wavelengths of each LED constituent are 465 and 628 nm for LEDs in blue and red, 452 nm for the blue LED colorant, 530 and 586 nm for the phosphors exhibiting green and orange colors. Under the CCT of 2722-6464 K, the attained actual LED package, either with conversion phosphor, in red or in blue, possibly displays both CRI and R9 values measured from 90 to 96, color quality scale (CQS) values measured from 89 to 94, with LERs and LEs of 303-358 lm/W and 105-119 lm/W, respectively

Experimental study of short concrete columns reinforced with GFRP bars under monotonic loading

The glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars are considered as an alternative reinforcement to steel in concrete structures subjected to chloride environment because of their non- corrosive and non-magnetic properties. To examine the applicability of GFRP bars to performance of concrete columns, this work was conducted. The effect of the compressive reinforcement ratio and stirrup spacing on the load carrying capacity of concrete columns reinforced with GFRP bars is experimentally investigated. Nine short concrete columns with dimensions of 150 Ă— 150 Ă— 600 mm were cast and tested until failure under displacement-controlled concentric loading. The experimental results demonstrated that by increasing the reinforcement ratio from 0.37% to 3.24%, the load-bearing capacity of GFRP RC columns was found to increase by an average of 28%. Moreover, the tested results confirmed that the GFRP stirrup spacing had a significant influence on the load-carrying capacity of the columns
